Why your key fob stopped working, and which of the three causes it probably is

A key fob that has stopped working is one of the more common calls we get, and it is also one of the most commonly overpaid for. People assume a dead remote means a new remote, and often it does not. There are three broad causes and only one of them requires replacing the unit.

Cause one: the battery

Start here, always. Fob batteries are small coin cells and they last a few years, and they tend to fail gradually rather than all at once. The classic pattern is a fob that works from three feet but not from across a parking lot, then works only when pointed directly at the car, then stops.

If your range has been quietly shrinking for a few weeks, this is almost certainly what you have. It is the cheapest fix on the list and it is worth ruling out before anything else.

One useful detail: most vehicles with push-to-start have a documented way to start the car with a dead fob, usually by holding the fob against a specific spot on the column or the start button. Your handbook will say where. That is worth knowing before you are standing in the rain.

Cause two: the buttons or the case

Fobs live in pockets, get sat on, go through washing machines and hit driveways. Physical failure is normal. The symptom that points here is selective: the lock button works and the unlock does not, or one button needs pressing unusually hard.

That is a fault in the contact under the rubber, not in the car, and it can often be repaired rather than replaced. A cracked case that has let water in is a different story and usually a shorter conversation.

Cause three: the pairing

The third cause is the one people rarely guess. A fob is not a simple transmitter shouting at the car. It is paired to your specific vehicle, and that relationship can be lost, most often after a battery disconnection, a jump start, some electrical work, or occasionally for no visible reason at all.

The tell here is that the fob is physically fine, has a fresh battery, and the car simply ignores it. Nothing is broken in your hand. The car has just stopped recognizing it.

This is reprogramming rather than replacement, and it is a very different price. It is also the case most likely to be misdiagnosed as needing a new fob.

When push-to-start suddenly stops starting

Proximity systems add a fourth possibility, which is that the fob is being detected but the vehicle is refusing it, or that the car cannot see the fob from where it is sitting in the cabin. Try holding it in a different position, and try the manufacturer's documented dead fob start procedure.

If neither works, this is worth an actual look. Push to start failures are usually solvable at the roadside, and often in a single visit, but they are not usually solvable by guessing.

How to narrow it down before you ring

• Does your second fob work? If yes, the car is fine and the fault is in the first fob.
• Has the range been shrinking over weeks? That points at the battery.
• Do some buttons work and others not? That points at the contacts.
• Fresh battery, all buttons, still ignored by the car? That points at the pairing.
• Did this start right after a jump start or battery change? That strongly points at the pairing.

Those five questions separate the three causes most of the time, and they cost nothing to answer in your driveway before anyone gets called out.
